Every doll artist knows who she is. Her books have been our bible. And I think she is partly responsible for making the dollmaking sub-culture what it is today.
I found out tonight that she passed away on August 22. She battled cancer the entire time she was writing the books that became our bible.
Because of her I learned how to make dolls. Every time I get an email from someone who wants to get into dollmaking or wants to know how to do it – I send them her way.
She was the first person to change all perceptions about dollmaking. She brought it from local craft fairs to gallery walls. The artists she featured in her books took everyone by surprise. Gone were any connections between Barbie or rag dolls. The dolls Oroyan was making and talking about were sheer artistry.
I am so sad that she is gone and will no longer be here to guide us and inspire us.
We will miss you, Susanna.
Wow! Thank you for printing this, Beth. I had no idea she was sick. I have all of Susana’s books, and I too learned everything I know from her. What a huge loss – your entry was beautifully written and said it all.
