For the last year I’ve been thinking of renting studio space. I thought that it might be nice to have a place people can visit that is outside of my home and, well, I need to get better acquainted with my local art community. I have been so engrossed in my own creative world, I forget there is one on the other side of the door. But I suppose that is why ‘art collectives’ started in the first place.
I haven’t looked at a ton of spaces but enough to know what I don’t want. So when I saw the ad for studio space in a renovated old Soda Plant in the Art District of town it sounded too cool to miss. I was so pleasantly surprised. The space is much larger than it seems in the photos online and there was a little room at the back of the sroom seemingly made for me. I assume this used to be the warehouse manager’s office or something. It is in the midst of everything but still private. And it has a funky window that looks out into the warehouse space.
Although Christy Mitchell is in the heated throes of trying to complete renovations and build the gallery and artist spaces before mid August, the plan is to open doors on Saturday, August 15 for a Benefit Party. Artwork will be auctioned off to raise money for the space. I’m working on my donation at the moment. The silent auction will take place from 5pm – 9pm that day.
We will also be open UNofficially for the First Friday Art Walk on August 7, and then the larger grand opening in September for the local Art Hop. In our building there will be some interesting things going on (there are a lot of other studios in the building as well as Conant Metal & Light, Inc.) so I hope that people will come over and pay us a visit, check out the new digs.
I will be providing more information and photos and such before long. But for now check out the blog at http://thetestsight.com
The collective is located at -roughly- 270 Pine Street, Burlington, Vermont 05401
