At 21 years old, Lisa became a double amputee when a staph infection grew so extreme that it cut off the blood flow to her extremities and caused the loss of her fingers and both legs. She has turned her loss into a profound artistic pursuit that has made her an award winning artist.
Originally focused on animation and doll making as a means to explore her body, in 2005 she turned the tables and made her body the focus of her creative expression, exploring dance and performance.
It is no surprise that she was Joel Peter Witkin’s Muse on occasion.
You can see video of her performances here.

Hi Claire, I looked up your mom and her story is really incredible. Working on a cook book for amputees – brilliant! What a strong woman. I posted this blog entry about Lisa Bufano because I was so inspired by her story and her dance but I have no contact with her. However, you can contact her directly through her website http://www.lisabufano.com/. I hope that the connection will help you and your mom, you may also want to contact The Gimp Project for ideas and support for her book project.
