For those of you in the USA who will be receiving a check from the government as part of the recent stimulus package – consider using the money to invest in American culture by supporting the arts. Depending on your economic status, of course, even a wee bit of the money could buy a print from your favorite artist, handmade jewelry from an artist’s etsy shop, a DVD of short films from an underground filmmaker, and download an album from an online band. Or try a night out at a locally owned restaurant.
Most people want to buy a bigger TV, a new game console, or go clothes shopping. The economic stimulus package is designed to encourage spending and stimulate our economy but most of the things Americans buy are manufactured overseas. And due to quality issues, most of it doesn’t have much of a shelf life. And a piece of art will last a lifetime. I know it sounds cheesy but it is true.
Please consider buying art and contributing to the artists who will build up the American culture as opposed to taking away from it.

Great post, Beth. Both timely and relevant. In our disposable society, hand-made creations should hold so much more worth–but unfortunately, many cannot break free of the “cheap and easy” consumer mentality that pervades our culture.
Hopefully, more people will begin to embrace the creations of individuals, rather than the soulless, plasticized junk that is cranked out by the thousands on a daily basis for mere profit.
Also, I like the new blog look!
I plan on asking for one of your dolls for my birthday in August. for Mothers Day, I sent my husband to a local artist. I think your post is a good idea and makes a good point.

The American people have to wake up and quit buying things from other countries and start buying american made, that is the only way to keep our economy going. When you buy items from other countries, you are only helping that country not this one. I hear people say that american products are to expensive and the reason they are is because they are good quality items. The second thing is we have to get the unions to quit being so greedy and to stop striking all the time for more and more money so they can raise their dues and live their extravagant life style. So wake up america and start buying american if you want to save your job.
